SK Hynix Unveils 6th Gen 10nm DDR5 DRAM
16Gb DDR5 DRAM Chip: SK Hynix Pushes the Limits of Technology
Seoul, South Korea, August 29, 2024 — SK Hynix announced the world’s first successful development of a 16Gb DDR5 DRAM chip using the sixth-generation 10nm-class (1c) process. This achievement demonstrates the company’s leadership in ultra-fine memory process technology. With each generation of 10nm-class DRAM technology, the difficulty of the miniaturization process has continued to increase, but SK Hynix, building on its fifth-generation (1b) technology, has improved the design completion and has taken the lead in pushing the limits of technology.
10nm DDR5 DRAM Chip: Preparations for Mass Production to Be Completed Within The Year
SK Hynix said it will complete preparations for mass production of 1c DDR5 DRAM chips within the year and start supplying products from next year to lead the development of the semiconductor memory market. The company developed the 1c process by expanding the 1b DRAM platform, thereby reducing trial and error in the process of process sophistication and effectively transferring the industry-recognized high-performance 1b process advantages to the 1c process.
16Gb DDR5 DRAM Chip: Optimizing Cost and Productivity
In addition, SK Hynix has developed and applied new materials in some EUV processes and optimized the entire EUV applicable process to ensure cost competitiveness. In the 1c process, the company has also carried out design technology innovation, and the productivity has increased by more than 30% compared with the previous generation 1b process.
10nm DDR5 DRAM Chip: Improving Performance and Energy Efficiency
The 1c DDR5 DRAM chip launched this time is mainly used in high-performance data centers, with an operating speed of 8Gbps, an increase of 11% over the previous generation. At the same time, energy efficiency has also increased by more than 9%. With the advent of the AI era, the power consumption of data centers continues to increase. If global customers use SK Hynix's 1c DDRAM chip in their data centers, it is expected that electricity costs can be reduced by up to 30%.
16Gb DDR5 DRAM Chip: Consolidating Market Leadership
SK Hynix DRAM Development Vice President Kim Jong-hwan said: "1c process technology combines the highest performance and cost competitiveness. The company will apply this technology to the most advanced DRAM main product groups such as the next-generation HBM, LPDDR6 and GDDR7 to provide differentiated value to customers. In the future, we will continue to maintain our leadership in the DRAM market and become the most trusted AI memory solution provider by customers."
